  17. <p>     THE MAULING OF MANDELA. Antiapartheid leader Nelson
  18. Mandela's ten-day tour through the U.S. is three weeks away,
  19. but it has already set off a frenzy of opportunism among
  20. organizers, peddlers and politicians. Officials at the African
  21. National Congress are so besieged with requests from T-shirt
  22. hustlers, record producers and concert promoters that they've
  23. started a file labeled SHARKS. In California the Mandela Visit
  24. Freedom Committee and the Southern California Chapter for the
  25. A.N.C. are jockeying over who has final say about his schedule
  26. there. And Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is preening
  27. for a summit. "The No. 1 man that Nelson Mandela must talk to
  28. and spend time with in America is Louis Farrakhan," declares
  29. a Nation of Islam supporter. Laments one A.N.C. organizer:
  30. "Mandela's just seen as a commodity."
